Experiential Learning is a K-6 year-round private elementary school that is specifically designed to serve the needs of children who might easily be left behind in a public school setting.
We started as an ABA clinic teaching language, cognitive, academic, and daily living skills to children with autism. We have always focused on hands on teaching, as we have discovered that children learn and retain knowledge best through experiences.
School readiness was an important aspect of our original program and we worked hard to help children prepare for kindergarten. However, what we found is that no matter how much progress a child might have made in our program, many of them showed substantial regression in the public school with respect to skills, behaviors and language. It was no fault of hard working and well intentioned school personnel; the regression was clearly due in large part to the school system itself being flawed. Something more was needed to help children learn to thrive and enjoy learning.
This is when Experiential Learning moved from intensive ABA services to school based services. Our school is specifically designed to serve the needs of children who might easily be left behind in a less than perfect public school setting which have limited resources, training, and skills, to adapt optimally to each child’s individual needs and learning styles.
An interactive educational setting where children feel empowered to exceed their potential.
Our classroom embraces the concept of blended learning, where students are thoughtfully matched, ensuring that each child can "learn up and model down" - learning from their peers and contributing to the learning of others.
Our classroom philosophy is inspired by educational approaches such as Reggio Emilia and Montessori. We prioritize an exploratory and child-led approach, allowing students to take the reins of their learning journey.
ABA is infused as foundation for all of our programs. At its core ABA is good teaching. We don’t do “traditional” for every child and instead infuse ABA into experiential instructional activities focusing on each child’s individual goals
Standard learning utilizes an IEP/personalized lesson plan only for children in special education.
Experiential Learning creates personalized lesson plans customized for the specific learning needs and goals for all students.
Standard learning calls for quarterly parent meetings regarding student goals.
Experiential Learning schedules weekly goal tracking and monthly meetings with teaching team.
Standard learning applies yearly goals that require intensive processes to change.
Experiential Learning incorporates Vision Goals with short term step-wise ladder goals, which are fluidly changed as appropriate.
Standard learning sees classrooms filled with 20-25 kids per class in general education.
Experiential Learning keeps class sizes between 8-10 children per class.
Standard learning includes 1 teacher and aide per classroom.
Experiential Learning includes 1 primary teacher, a teacher's aide, a teaching assistant, and a personal tutor or registered behavior technician assigned to each child.
In Standard learning, ABA/Behavior Analytic services may be provided on a consult basis with some in classroom implementation.
In Experiential Learning, ABA services are a foundation of our program and instruction is integrated throughout each activity all day. A BCBA is onsite for the duration of the day to assist with skills training and behavior management.
In Standard learning teaching staff have teaching degrees and experience.
Our Experiential Learning teachers have appropriate teaching degrees, but they, as well as all other staff members, are also Registered Behavior Technicians.
In Standard learning lessons are are provided similarly to the entire class.
In Experiential Learning, activities are facilitated in which the class participates, but each child may be working on a different goal during that activity. For example, in the same math activity, one child may be learning division and another may be learning to count or identify numbers.
Standard learning separates special education and general education classrooms.
Experiential Learning classrooms are inclusive and have students with and without disabilities.
Standard learning special education classrooms have a wide disparity of needs, challenges, ages, abilities and behaviors.
Experiential Learning focuses on matching classroom students to form a cohort where students can feel safe and learn from each other. If a student has disruptive behaviors we have a behavioral team to address this.
In Standard learning, students may be sent home for problematic behaviors.
Experiential Learning teachers and staff are trained to deal with problematic behaviors and very few instances arise where a child would be sent home for this reason.
Every student has unique needs for support. Tell us more about what you are hoping our school can do for you, and we will start on a plan to help you achieve it.
